A mother’s sacrificial love is something that cannot be quantified and is not duplicated in any other relationship. As Robert Browning once said:
“Motherhood: All love begins and ends there.”
One Sunday in May every year, we celebrate this amazing love between mothers and their children. How can your church make this year’s Mother’s Day service the most memorable yet?
1. Make a Mom and Me Video
You don’t have to limit it to just young kids either. Get the teenagers involved and give them a chance to tell their mom thank you in a unique way. Who knows – it might be the first time in a long time that a teen’s mom feels loved and appreciated by her kids.
2. Prepare for Increased Attendance
You are likely aware of the fact that your Christmas and Easter services bring in the biggest crowds to your church. However, did you know that the third most attended church service is Mother’s Day?
Therefore, many attendees will be visiting your church either for the first time or in a long time. To make Mother’s Day memorable, be sure to prepare for an influx of visitors and plan accordingly so you can minister to all women who attend.
3. Provide a Mother’s Day Meal
Who doesn’t love a good potluck? Plan a nice after-service meal for your members in honor of Mother’s Day. Either hire a caterer, have your staff prepare a meal, or make it a churchwide pitch-in. The type of food doesn’t matter, it’s the act of providing a meal for moms that’s important. Whether you have the dads grill burgers and hot dogs or you serve something minimal like turkey sandwiches, the meal will be a huge hit with your members.
Preparing a meal for moms is a wonderful way to give them a break from worrying about feeding the family on their special day. Moms and their families can take advantage of an enjoyable meal free-of-charge.
This is also a great way to get to know visitors who do not normally attend your church. Invite those who are visiting for the holiday to your Mother’s Day meal, and let them enjoy the welcoming atmosphere of your church.
4. Have a Sermon Geared Around Moms
Another way to make a Mother’s Day service memorable is to focus the sermon itself on moms. Highlight various Biblical women and how they served in the role of mother. You could also speak about modern day moms and how we should continue to value them, whether they work outside the home or stay home with their children.
No matter how you relate your sermon to the idea of motherhood, your membership will appreciate the timely message.
5. Remember the Childless and Those Who Have Lost Their Mothers
Although Mother’s Day is a joyous time for many, for some it can be one of the most difficult days of the year. This is because some women have remained childless, though they have yearned for children with all their heart. Other individuals have lost their mother and the day simply highlights the permanent hole in their heart they have for their mom.
To ensure you don’t make the pain worse for these people, don’t ask the mothers to stand up to be recognized during service. This will cause pain to childless women in attendance who would do anything to become a mom. Instead, you can ask everyone who has had a mother to raise their hand or stand up. This is everyone. We were all born of a mother, so that way no one is left out.
If you are planning to give away flowers or other items to moms as they enter or leave service, plan to have enough to give to all women and girls. If you know someone is hurting, stop to give them a hug. The kind gesture can go a long way toward healing for those who are left out of most Mother’s Day festivities.
Make It Happen with Increased Church Giving
All the suggestions listed above will ensure that your Mother’s Day service is the most memorable yet – but not everything on the list is free. You may need to raise some money to bring about such a great celebration for your members.
Thankfully, your church can utilize a variety of church giving solutions to raise funds for the holiday. Using technology like Givelify to boost church giving before the day arrives can help you prepare for the expense. This easy-to-use church giving app allows you to increase your churches funds by making it fun and easy to donate. You can even set up a special Mother’s Day envelope in the app so that your members can donate directly to the cause.
In addition to preparing for Mother’s Day, you can also use Givelify to boost church giving during the service itself. After all, you will have many extra visitors in attendance who don’t always have an opportunity to give to a church. These guests will be able to participate in giving from the convenience of their phone, even if they have never before visited your church – and they will be able to continue giving throughout the year, too.
