Giving Tuesday: It’s Not Too Late to Get On Board!

It’s not too late the get on board with #GivingTuesday. Giving Tuesday began in 2012 as a way to encourage people to give back during the holiday season. It dovetails on the two biggest shopping days of the year (Black Friday and Cyber Monday), and aims to complement these days of consumerism with a global day of giving.

While Giving Tuesday focuses primarily on nonprofits, churches can also use the day to encourage faith-based giving. According to GivingTuesday.org, last year:

  • Over $116 million was donated in one day across all fundraising sectors
  • Faith-based organizations represented 21% of all contributions, the highest of any sector
  • The average donation was $107
  • Faith-based organizations averaged $280 per donation

So with Giving Tuesday just three days away, isn’t it too late to get on board? Absolutely not! Your members are likely well aware of the day, as it’s become more ingrained in popular culture. There are news stories about it across all types of media, and it’s become a widely-known tradition in just a few short years.

Getting involved doesn’t require a big campaign leading up to it (although it helps). We have a post with all kinds of ideas for how to leverage Giving Tuesday, and you can also get some last-minute fundraising ideas from the GivingTuesday.org site.

  • Work Giving Tuesday into this Sunday’s service
  • Send out an email reminder on Monday to all your members
  • Include Giving Tuesday images in your social media
  • Include links to your church’s Givelify app and online giving profile in social media posts
  • Be sure to use the #GivingTuesday hashtag on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram

It’s never too late to tap into your members’ generosity and use the power of a global day of giving. This is especially true as a Givelify member church, since your members can give from wherever they are.

So don’t delay: get on board with Giving Tuesday now.
