A new report commissioned by Dunham+Company says that one out of three (33%) donors aged 75 and over used online giving in 2016. This somewhat surprising data flies in the face of the idea that seniors — the so-called Silent Generation — won’t adapt and use technology.
We often think of the younger donor as the one giving online. But the fact is the older donor demographic is beginning to adopt this giving behavior.

Not only are older adults migrating to online giving, they’re using it more frequently than younger generations. Seniors gave 25% more often online than any other age group.In addition to this revelation, the survey revealed several other key findings. One of these is that one in four (25%) donors have now used their smartphones to give. This is a sizeable leap, up from 18% in 2015 and 10% in 2013.
The report is the seventh annual produced by the company, and seeks to understand donors’ interest and involvement with online giving. Data comes from a 15-minute online survey of 1,391 people who had given at least $20 to charity in the past year.
